Chopping, Burning, and Kissing: The Comedic Violence of Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega’s Latest Video

The “graphic violence” warning at the start of Sabrina Carpenter’s new music video for her single “Taste” from her just-released sixth album, “Short n’ Sweet,” might initially suggest that the lighthearted revenge themes of her previous videos have taken a darker turn. However, despite the murder weapons, amputations, and buckets of blood that she and Jenna Ortega unleash in the humorously Tarantino-esque clip, complete with nods to the 1992 film “Death Becomes Her,” the violence comes across more like a cartoon.

In their battle over a boyfriend (played by fellow “Halloween” actor Rohan Campbell), Ortega sets Carpenter on fire, chops off her arm, throws her out of a window, impales her on a white picket fence, and even electrocutes her — all in a way that's surprisingly hilarious. Naturally, Carpenter fights back just as fiercely. Spoiler alert: The two end up walking away from the boyfriend's funeral together, sipping coffees and comparing notes on him.

Carpenter co-wrote “Taste” with Julia Michaels and Amy Allen, while John Ryan and Ian Kirkpatrick served as producers. The tracklist for her new album, Short n’ Sweet (releasing Friday), features the top five singles “Please Please Please” and “Espresso,” as well as new tracks like “Sharpest Tools,” “Coincidence,” “Good Graces,” “Slim Pickins,” “Juno,” “Lie to Girls,” “Bed Chem,” “Dumb & Poetic,” and “Don’t Smile.”

Carpenter recently shared details about the album, calling it “the hot older sister” of Emails. “It’s my second ‘big girl’ album,” she said. “It’s a companion to Emails, but not identical. With full creative control and a more mature perspective, I’d consider this my true sophomore album.”

The “Sweet n’ Sour” tour will kick off with a North American leg on September 23 in Columbus, Ohio, before heading to the UK and Europe in 2025. Carpenter has already sold out 33 arena shows across North America, including performances at New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Supporting acts for the North American tour will be Amaarae, Griff, and Declan McKenna, while Rachel Chinouriri will join her as the opening act for the international dates.
