Malayalam cinema once meant sex films, says Ram Gopal Verma

Ram Gopal Varma, known for his candid opinions on filmmaking, society, and politics, recently shared his thoughts on the transformation of Malayalam cinema. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Varma noted that the industry, now celebrated for its storytelling, was once primarily associated with explicit sexual content.

Reflecting on this shift, Varma remarked, "There was a time when Malayalam cinema was known as the home of sex films. When I was an engineering student in Vijayawada, we avoided watching Malayalam films because they contained more sexual content than any other industry. But today, the best films are emerging from the Malayalam industry in every way."

Varma also praised recent films like The Kerala Story, calling it one of the best he has seen, alongside other films like Hanu-Man and Kalki 2898 AD, showcasing his appreciation for bold and impactful cinema.
